We support small businesses to grow in Ghana, Uganda and Zambia. Over time this creates jobs and improves local economies.
We believe that everyone has the right to earn a decent living because no one wants to rely on charity or aid. A secure income is the first step to ending the cycle of poverty.
We match teams of volunteers to overseas businesses. As a Challenges Worldwide ICS volunteer you’ll get the training, support and mentoring that you need to contribute to lasting, sustainable change.
What you can achieve
You’ll work closely with a small business, in markets that vary from food and drink to alternative energy sources, to find out what could be done differently. Then you’ll support them to make those changes.
This might mean introducing new ways for a business to manage its finances, creating a marketing plan or writing a social media strategy – whatever it is, you’ll be supported by our experienced staff every step of the way.
In the short term your work will directly impact the lives of the people you work with. In the longer term your work will contribute to building sustainable local economies that offer people opportunities for their futures.
Our commitment to you
We are committed to the personal and professional growth of our volunteers. Your placement is an amazing opportunity to develop business skills that can help you find a job.
As part of our commitment to you, when you return home we’ll support you to present everything you learned on placement in a way that will appeal to potential employers.
We also have a partnership with the Chartered Management Institute. Your time overseas can contribute to a qualification that’s highly valued by employers and can be great for your career.
How it works
Our placements are in urban environments in the capital cities of Ghana, Uganda and Zambia. They last 10-12 weeks and we have departures throughout the year.
You’ll be part of a large team of volunteers from the UK and local volunteers, and you’ll work in pairs with the business you’re matched to.
In your pair you’ll live with a local family, an amazing opportunity to learn about the culture in ways that can help you support your business.© ICS / Andrew Aitchison
