ICS youth employability event

Stand up for youth employability

Every year ICS host events to bring volunteers and communities together - to network, build skills and stand up for key issues.

Last year, we took the opportunity to celebrate the ICS programme and the amazing achievements of youth volunteers with a global series of events which reached over 3000 people. This year we’re focusing on youth employability.

Globally, youth unemployment is a significant problem, with young people three times more likely to be unemployed than adults. Read more here.

We need you

This event is for young people, so we think it should be designed with young people and delivered by young people.

We’re looking for six-eight UK volunteers to help us organise and run the event.

These volunteers will form a Youth Steering Group that will work with VSO and the ICS agencies to create an engaging, inclusive and rewarding event.

The UK event will take place on Saturday 10 August 2019 (the weekend before International Youth Day) in London.

Why sign up?

Our events provide a platform for young people to discuss and challenge the way people think about key issues affecting young people. So members of the Youth Steering Group will ensure the thoughts and opinions of young people are included in the design and delivery of this event.

What’s more, it is a great opportunity to develop skills, meet new people and have fun.

What's involved?

Members of the Youth Steering Group will need:

  • To be available for our introductory meeting at VSO’s Kingston Office. This will be on Saturday 11 May 2019 from 11:00-2:00pm;

  • To commit to regular online meetings (every four weeks). Schedule to be agreed together, when group has been selected.

What skills or experience do I need?

Motivation and commitment are key! We’re looking for young people who are:

  • Passionate about international development and/or the global issue of youth unemployment
  • Responsible, self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Comfortable working as part of a team
  • Able to communicate effectively.

Is this a paid opportunity?

This is not a salaried role. However, all reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed and lunch will be provided.

Why youth unemployment?

Globally, youth unemployment is a significant problem. Did you know...

  • Young people are almost three times more likely to be unemployed than adults.

  • Young people make up a quarter of the world’s population.

  • Out of 1.8 billion youth globally, 90% live in developing countries.

  • Youth may also face additional barriers due to gender, disability or location.

  • Youth unemployment has a potential to have serious social repercussions, including unrest and exclusion.

Through these events, we want to:

  1. Provide a platform for young people to challenge the issue of youth unemployment.

  1. To help you to talk about and build on the skills you gained by volunteering with ICS, that could support you career goals.
