*If you have already been placed with Raleigh ICS, your placement will continue as normal.
We believe that when local communities and young people work side by side to create positive change, it empowers them. And it’s the energy and motivation of empowered people that creates lasting change.
Raleigh International work in partnership with communities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and governments in Nepal, Nicaragua and Tanzania. Since our foundation in 1984, Raleigh volunteers have become a global community of more than 42,000 people committed to building a sustainable future.
What projects could you work on?
All our projects are created with the needs of the communities in mind and often take place over several years to ensure their sustainability. This means you will be part of creating lasting change during your placement. Our projects focus mainly on women, children and young people and cover the below two areas:
Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)
On our WASH projects you will be working with the community to improve access to clean water and adequate sanitation facilities.
During your placement, you could be involved in a variety of activities such as research into current hygiene practices, awareness raising sessions or the construction of handwashing stations and toilets.
On our Livelihoods projects you will be working with women and young people who are interested in setting up their own sustainable businesses.
You will help them conduct research into supply and demand, work with them on their business plans and cash flows and collaborate on writing a business pitch that they can use to request money from investors.
Don’t worry if you don’t have specific business knowledge as full support is provided.
How it works
On Raleigh ICS you’ll be part of a team of around 12 people; a 1:1 mix of UK and local volunteers. You will be supported by two team leaders, in-country staff and a local community organisation. With your in-country counterpart you’ll live with a host family allowing you to immerse yourself fully in the country’s culture.
