Tearfund ICS

Tearfund is a Christian international relief and development agency. We work through local churches to unlock people's potential and help them to discover that the answer to poverty is within themselves.

We work in more than 50 countries around the world. When disasters strike, we respond quickly. We won't stop until poverty stops.

Types of project

We run placements that are primarily aimed at Christians wanting to explore their faith in the context of poverty and development. You'll work closely with the local church on projects meeting the needs of the local community.

We have also recently launched a new placement called Explore in South Africa. This is an opportunity for people of all faiths or none to volunteer alongside others with different beliefs and to explore the key role faith based organisations have in sustainable development.

Volunteer in Bangladesh and work on projects to inspire local youth to be active participants in their local communities, supporting local partners to help their communities get access to clean water, livelihoods, and education.

Volunteer in South Africa and work on projects focused on child development. You could find yourself working in schools, running after school programmes, holiday clubs, youth groups and some HIV awareness workshops.

Supporting health initiatives

Volunteers with Restless Development and Tearfund will be working on projects to raise awareness and help reduce rates of HIV and AIDS in local communities of South Africa. Projects may include sex education, addressing teenage pregnancy, tackling stigma and other social issues such as gender violence.

Volunteers reach young people through schools, community groups and at events created to raise awareness.

Restless Development projects are located in the Eastern Cape region. Tearfund projects are located in KwaZulu Natal and Limpopo.

How it works

You'll be part of a group of six to twenty international and national volunteers. You’ll be paired up with other volunteers and live in host homes with local people from the community. You'll be supported by our in-country staff. As our placements are primarily aimed at Christians we encourage our teams to pray, worship and read the bible together.
